She is a constant bother to her older brother Taihei at home but since her attitude changes outside her house, Taihei has no proof to expose her little sister. 19. To Love Ru
How will you react if a beautiful alien princess suddenly appears and proclaims you as her fiancé? This is the situation Yuuki Rito finds himself in when Lala Satalin Deviluke, the princess of the planet Deviluke barges into his life. However, Yuuki already has a love interest in Haruno Sairenji, his childhood friend. To Love Ru is a story with a love triangle of sort but that soon breaks down when a host of other girls show up, all vying for Yuuki Rito. The show is of the ecchi genre so you can expect lots of fan service in it. The story is fairly simple and light-hearted, intended mostly for humor and fan service. Therefore, if you come looking for groundbreaking stories and deeply layered plot, you might not find what you are looking for. 18. The Devil Is A Part-Timer (Hataraku Maou-sama)
The king of demons Satan attempts to conquer the land of Ente Isla along with his four trusted general and a vast horde of a demonic army. In a bizarre turn of events, Satan and his loyal general Alsiel are forced to retreat into a portal which leads to the modern world of Tokyo, after being humiliated by the heroine Emilia. Upon entering the mortal realm, Satan and Alsiel lost all their forms of magic, rendering them helpless, with no way to return to the demon realm. To make means end, they both have to take up human forms and take up jobs like an ordinary human being. Satan himself has to work at a local fast food restaurant called ‘MgRonald’s‘, suffering the everyday turmoil of the common man. One day, Satan who now calls himself ‘Sadao Mao’ meets a girl Emi Yusa, who actually is the heroine Emilia who defeated him in battle. The Devil is a Part-Timer takes a hilarious perspective of life, from the eyes of a once powerful Demon Lord who is ridiculed by forcing him to participate in the mundane and absurd reality.
17. Seitokai Yakuindomo
Ousai Private Academy, a prestigious all-girls high school is converted to co-ed to cope with the declining birth rate. The main character Takatoshi Tsuda is one of the first male students to register at the school, therefore the boys to girls’ ratio are still pretty wide. On his first day at school, Takatoshi is called out and apprehended by the Student Council for his untidy uniform. The Council proceeds to force him to accept the role of Vice President as a male representative to which he reluctantly agrees. The Council comprises of gorgeous girls in the form of the President Shino Amakusa, Secretary Aria Shichijou, and Treasurer Suzu Hagimura. You may think Takatoshi is lucky to be among them but you couldn’t be more wrong – Shino and Aria have an extremely preserve personalities, constantly making lewd jokes at anything while Suzu is extremely sensitive of her small figure. Seitokai Yakuindomo explores the hectic daily routine of the Student Council with Takatoshi at the center, constantly tormented by the eccentric and hilarious girls around him.
16. Arakawa Under The Bridge
Kou Ichinomiya, the son of a wealthy businessman has one strict rule in his life – ‘Never be indebted to anyone!’ Using this strict philosophy, he has disciplined his life to the point where he gets an asthma attack if he owes a debt to someone. One day, he fell under Arakawa Bridge, courtesy of some mischievous kids. Nino, a homeless girl who is passing by saves him and now, using his very own rule, Ichinomiya finds himself indebted to her. However, Nina has only one wish which is ‘falling in love’ and finding a boyfriend. Trapped by his own convictions, Ichinomiya has no choice but to become Nina’s boyfriend and live with her under Urakawa Bridge. There, he is surprised to discover a bustling society full of unique, weird, and eccentric characters and now, he has to find a way to assimilate into their village. 15. Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid (Kobayashi-san chi no Maid Dragon)
How would one react to find a giant terrifying dragon at our doorstep? Kobayashi, an office worker who likes to take the occasional drink finds herself in that exact situation. The dragon transforms into a small and cute maid and then proceeds to explain that in a drunken frenzy the night before, Kobayashi helps the dragon by removing a sword on her back in the mountains. Having no place to stay, Kobayashi reluctantly agrees to keep the dragon as a maid, who calls herself Tohru. Although efficient as a housemaid, Tohru’s unconventional manner of organizing the house often scares Kobayashi. For the better or worse, Tohru’s dragon aura begins to attract more mythical creatures into their household and soon, Kobayashi finds herself with a horde of strange mythical creatures. Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is definitely an entertaining watch, full of gold comical scenes, with a slight slice of life tone.
14. Ouran High School Host Club
One of the best known reverse harem shows in anime, Ouran High School Host Club features the adventures of Haruhi Fujioka, a scholarship student at the elite and prestigious Ouran Academy. After breaking an expensive vase, she unwillingly joins the Host Club led by the popular boys of the school where they entertain the female students for a fee. Haruhi, despite being a female, proves to be a natural in entertaining these girls, and soon gets promoted to a full-time host. 11. Saint Young Men
You will either find ‘Saint Young Man’ downright offensive or you will love it for its unique and hilarious story. Jesus Christ, the founder of Christianity and Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism are both on a vacation in Modern Tokyo, living together as roommates. They try their best to conceal their identity, and acts like a typical Japanese teenager, spending their vacation days sightseeing, blogging, drinking beer, playing video games, and other shenanigans. There are often hilarious jokes regarding their respective religion, such as when Yakuza member mistook Jesus as a boss from his severed palms or when Buddha literally emits golden light when he gets excited. Saint Young Man is an absurd portrayal of two of the greatest teachers in history, and if you not ultra-sensitive about your faith, you might just love this one.
10. Baka To Test to Shoukanjuu (Baka & Test: Summon the Beasts)
Fumizuki Academy in Japan is a prestigious institution which divides its students into hierarchical classes depending on their intellectual prowess. Akihisa Yoshii, the main character is a prime idiot; therefore, it is of little surprise when he ends up in Class F, the bottom feeders of the school. Paired with Mizuki Himeji, a highly intellectual girl who ends up in Class F due to a fever and Minami Shimada, a transfer student from Germany who cannot grasp the concept of kanji, the story revolves around the love triangle escalating between these three characters. Students of Fumizuki Academy can summon familiars called Summoned Beings which are often utilized to measures a student’s aptitude. Using these Summon Beasts, Class F must battle against the higher classes in the hope of increasing their lot in school. ‘Baka to Test’ is one of those shows that perfectly use nonsensical elements to generate its humor, which augments its position as one of the top comedy anime series.
9. Kaichou wa Maid-Sama!
Also simply known as Maid Sama!, the show gains immense popularity when it first airs in 2010. Seika High, formerly an all-boys high school is recently converted to co-ed and Misaki Ayuzawa is the first female Student Council President. Since the girls are still a minority in the school, Misaki maintains a strict discipline among the boys, which earns her the nickname ‘Demon President’. However, behind her elegant façade, Misaki has to work as a maid in café to help her struggling family. When Takumi Usui, a popular student discovers her secret, he could either expose her which would destroy her stellar reputation or he could use it to manipulate her and possibly get closer to her. ‘Kaichou wa Maid-sama!’ offers genuine and natural comedy in all its 26 episodes. 8. Detroit Metal City
Johannes Krauser II, the lead singer of Detroit Metal City is a self-proclaimed demonic being who hailed from the fiery pits of hell to bring order to the chaotic society. Both Krauser II and his band are immensely famous, garnering lots of devoted followers in their musical career. However, Krauser II is simply an alter ego of Soichi Negishi, a laid back musician who likes indie Swedish pop music and a pacifist, contrary to his demonic personality which often encourages immoral activities. Soichi is getting sick of his demonic personality, and constantly keeping his dual identities a secret from his family and the public. However, when he gets on stage, a trance takes over him and his demonic side emerges, so ridiculously talented that he can play the lead guitar using only his teeth. There is not much to add here except that Detroit Metal City is mind-bogglingly hilarious, and definitely one of the top comedy anime series.
7. Daily Lives of High School Boys
There are a few greater powers a person has than the power of imagination. Daily Lives of High School Boys is a living testament to that statement. Three boys who are bored with the mundane nature of everyday lives, under the colorful imagination of their leader Hidenori sought to enact a bit of interest in their lives. Honestly, the show has so many positive aspects it is impossible to mention them all. With stellar voice acting and pure comedy-drama, Daily Lives of High School Boys stands out for its lack of any ‘moe’ main character and its satirical deconstruction of common anime tropes.

6. Asobi Asobase – Workshop of Fun
Although not officially acknowledge, Asobi Asobase is the female counterpart of Daily Lives of High School Boys. Olivia, Hanako, and Kasumi are three middle-class scholars that form a peculiar three-way friendship and the equally peculiar ‘Pasttime Club’. Asobi Asobase is the amalgamation of everything that is essential for a good comedy – ridiculous scenes, excellent voice acting, vividly comical facial expression, and tons of school gags. Watching Asobi Asobase will give you an experience like no other, definitely a masterpiece anime comedy that will be remembered for years to come. Well played, Studio Lerche.
5. Nichijou My Ordinary Life
You may recall a viral and hilarious anime scene which features a man wrestling and performing a suplex on a deer. Yep, that is from Nichijou and the series is full of hilarious moments, some of them even funnier than the suplex scene. Nichijou explores the hectic and funny everyday lives of three high school girls – Mio Naganohara, Yuuko Aioi, and Mai Minakami. Add to these are a host of weird characters in the form of an android schoolgirl Nano Shinonome and her eight-year-old creator called the Professor, and lastly, a talking cat called Sakamoto, simply because, ‘Why not’? You can probably guess from the absurd cast the direction Nichijou is headed. It is characteristically funny, ridiculous most of the times, and wildly compelling. Nichijou is definitely among the top tier comedy series in anime.
4. Great Teacher Onizuka
Eikichi Onizuka is the vicious leader of a notorious biker gang who suddenly decides to turn a new leaf and become the worlds’ greatest teacher, in the hopes of meeting sexy high school girls. His desire to become a leader is inspired by the incident where his date with a girl is interrupted by the girl’s boyfriend who is a teacher. After attaining a teaching degree, he is hired by a Private School in Kichijoji to teach a class of delinquents that have previously driven a teacher to death, another to a mental breakdown, and another one to join a cult. Onizuka’s teaching methods are unorthodox and unconventional but somehow, they prove effective in taming the class of delinquents. Great Teacher Onizuka is one of the best comedy anime series that will make you laugh in tears but underneath the humor undertone, lies a deep and meaningful moral.
Hinamatsuri is a stand out comical reverse Isekai anime, in a world where the Isekai theme is rapidly becoming an overused trope. Yoshifumi Nita, a member of the notorious Yakuza clan is hit on the head by a strange capsule that suddenly materializes. Inside the capsule, lies a beautiful blue-haired girl Hina who wields unimaginable psychokinetic powers. Since Hina has trouble remembering anything other than her name, reluctantly Nita agrees to become her caretaker. However, Hina’s telekinetic powers prove to be immensely useful in his Yakuza dealings. Thus begins the tale of the strange duo, which contains the finest quality of humor, and which will keep you entertained throughout the whole series.
Of course, we did not forget about Gintama, how could we? The highest rated shonen of My Anime List, Gintama is on a class of its own, both in its story and comedy. The premise is set up strongly and the main character Gintama is a samurai who loves sweet things, in a world where samurais are rendered obsolete and liable. The world is so absurdly rich, ranging from extraterrestrial beings to monsters and to gangster wars, the action never stops and neither does the comedy. Gintama is the epitome of entertainment at its peak, one that will keep you laughing in tears throughout the entirety of its 200 plus episodes. Truly, outstandingly, and deservedly, Gintama is one of the greatest comedy anime shows of all times.
1. KonoSuba : God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World
KonoSuba, the champion of the Isekai theme is ironically a mockery of all the overused clichés and tropes of the prevalent Isekai theme. After experiencing one of the most hilarious death scenes in anime, Satou Kazuma is given a chance to start a new life in a world to defeat the Demon King. He is accompanied by his band of useless party which features Aqua the useless idiotic Goddess, Megumin the explosion maniac, and Darkness the masochistic knight.
These cute girls are simply not worth the trouble but Kazuma has no choice but to stick with them. Not much needed to be said except that you should go watch KonoSuba if you haven’t already. After watching the thrilling, entertaining, and comical 20 episodes and two OVA, KonoSuba is our chosen number 1 comedy series in anime, and the perfect show to close off our list.
